Free WinZip alternative
ZipItFree is a free WinZip alternative that makes use of advanced Black Hole Super 5X Compression technology to compress your files as much as possible.
Apart from anything else, the best thing about ZipItFree is that it is completely free - no annoying registrations or fees to pay. That said, the installation process is very aggressive, with ZipItFree offering you bunches of extra software and changing the way it is presented in the hope that you'll slip up and install it. The program is fully functional with Vista and Windows 7, although the interface isn’t quite up to speed with similarly modern programs.
The key point of ZipItFree, however, is the way it compresses files using what the developers call the Black Hole method, which provides very high compression ratios and ultra fast decompression. This is so efficient, in fact, that ZipItFree is a serious rival to the giants of the file compression world, like WinZip and WinRAR.
The other major selling point is what they call the ZipV2 encryption algorithm which they describe as "by far the most secure encryption for archiving (hundreds of times more secure than even the leading AES encryption)". How secure this format is is debatable, but the fact is that it's one of the less utilized compression ratios that should mean it's less liable to attack.
Apart from the fact that ZipItFree handles multiple formats with ease, you can also leave comments on your archives describing what the archive contains so you don't have to go to the hassle of unzipping it all to look inside. If you can overlook the ugly packaging, ZipItFree is a file compressor to be reckoned with.
For a free and powerful alternative to WinZIP and WinRAR, ZipItFree is one of the most impressive efforts out there.

Horrible malware.
Horrible malware. Turned my super fast dell into a slug. Couldn't uninstall it until I found a a well-reviewed utility called Advanced Uninstaller Pro at www.advanceduninstaller.com. (Be sure to uncheck the usual boxes for McAfee & other crapware before you download & install). By the time I found the uninstaller I'd already done a system restore & spent most of a day trying to get my dell to work ok again.
Pros:
that i finally found an uninstall utility
marketing this trash should be a criminal act
Cons:
even the uninstaller wasn't functional More

no good for RAR archives.
I have tried to extract several different RAR archives with ZipItFree, and so far it has failed to extract more than one of them. In fairness, I did not build the RAR archives myself, so I don't have any other way to confirm with 100% certainty that they are in fact RAR format, and not something else (somebody may have change the file name extension, for example). ZipItFree does make it very easy to add files to your own compressed archive, and that can be very useful. I intend to keep this application on my PC, and try it on different file types as I encounter them. I am looking for a different extractor for RAR archives in the meantime.
Pros:
Easy to install (you have the option of having it start up automatically when you boot up, or not), easy to create compressed files and archives, designed to handle multiple compression formats; and you can't beat the price
Cons:
does not extract RAR archives reliably More

OS Requirements.
Many software products advertise that they are Vista and Windows 7 compatible. Unfortunately that is not enough info being provided for OS requirements. I run Vista x64 for an OS and will soon be upgrading to Windows 7 x64 OS. Simply put, there are two versions of each of these operating systems: an x32 bit and an x64 bit. I would like to know when programs are SPECIFICALLY compatible with the x64 bit OSes.
Thank you. More

don't install this software!.
This software just plain sucks. I tried to install it and the installer hung up. It said that ZipItFree was installed, so I tried it. It hung up - nothing happens, it just enters a process and stops. I tried to uninstall, and again, nothing happens, it just enters a process and hangs up. And then they have the nerve to try to sell a PC cleaner program in the "notes.html". It will probably take me several hours to get rid of this crap-ware.
Pros:
none
Cons:
bad installer, program hangs, can't uninstall. More
